On Saturday 31 August 2024 Pirbright Horticultural Society held a Celebration tea party in Lord Pirbright’s Hall. The party was to celebrate the anniversary of the first meeting of the Society 125 years ago. The Chairman, Philip Barralet, welcomed the special guests who included Sallie Barker, Mayor of Guildford; Geoff Peach, Horticultural judge; Hilary Askew, Craft judge, Elizabeth Barralet, Floral art judge and Judy Williams, publicity designer.
Mr. Barralet read from a newspaper article a report of the inaugural show in 1899 which was opened by Lord Pirbright; one of the judges of the exhibits was his head gardener.
The invitees included some 60 current and former members of the Pirbright Horticultural Society and their families. An excellent tea was furnished by Merrow Savouries. Among the raffle prizes was a painting by local artist Maggie Read.
Many messages of appreciation were received afterwards.
Pirbright Horticultural Society organises a programme of speakers and other activities on the second Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm at Lord Pirbright’s Hall to which members and visitors are welcome. Our Annual Show takes place at the end of July and we also hold a plant sale in the village in May each year.
